Our History

On October 1933, The Mt. Sinai Holy Church of America, Inc. started a church in Newark, NJ and Bishop Elmira Jeffries was the first Pastor. In 1934, Elder M.E. Stith came to lead the Newark flock. Here she found Sister Katherine C. Lewis steadfast and patiently waiting for a Pastor to take charge at 24 Rutgers Street, where God continued to bless and make his people a blessing. In 1937, the membership moved to 294 Mulberry Street where many souls were reached for Christ and His glory. The underprivileged were cared for with shelter, food and clothing. Out of this humble beginning evolved the Zion Gospel Mission. In 1941, when God opened the way for the purchase of the building at 165 South Orange Avenue, the mission became known as Zion Holy Church. God began to pour out many blessings upon His people and added to the church in a miraculous manner.

As the membership expanded, it became necessary to seek larger quarters for worship. After constantly seeking divine guidance, the Pastor was led by the Lord to build a house for His people. In 1958, the Lord made possible the purchase of two buildings at 103-107 Camden Street. The men of the congregation demolished these buildings in 1959. After the plans were drawn and it became evident that the cost of constructing this new edifice would exceed one hundred thousand dollars, the members decided to build the church themselves. With faith believing that God would supply every need, they began construction in May 1960. The church was completed and dedicated on the 2nd Sunday in July 1961. The church prospered under the leadership of Elder Stith until her death in June of 1970. Bishop Leonard R. Williams succeeded her. Under his Pastorate, many souls were saved and added to the church. In addition, the church was blessed to purchase property, establish new fellowships and to expand the outreach ministries through the medium of radio and television.

The church stood as a pillar in the community providing a place of worship for all, teaching the values and morals that are essential for proper social interaction and successful living within the community. In January 1996, the church was greatly damaged by fire and was temporarily located at Ephesus Pentecostal Church for 15 months. By April 1997, the congregation was able to march back in the newly renovated church under the leadership of the newly appointed Pastor, Elder Evelyn Williams.

God is blessing our church to grow in many ways; including a steady increase in membership, building an adjacent parking lot, as well as paving and fencing it in. We continue to see progress with our Youth dept. as it motivates & encourages the younger generation through its annual retreat, extravaganza, outings, weekly bible studies, tutoring program, liturgical dance ministry and the youth choir.  Community outreach continues to expand through our committed ministers and the Nursing Home, Men's & Women's ministries, our faithful Missionary department who advance local and foreign missions and the loyal participants of Vacation  Bible  School.

The membership is excited and encouraged by all that has been accomplished. In actuality, we are experiencing a rebirth of our total essence as God is unfolding our future in an awesome way. We are attempting great things for God and God is crowning our efforts with success. For seventy-seven years God has allowed Zion Holy Church to lift up a standard of holiness despite the constant changes in social and moral standards. The church has maintained its power and strength, by upholding the things that are right and holding fast to the profession of faith in Christ Jesus.
